The Twilight Sad

  • What is it about a strong Scottish accent that sounds so awesome in song? The wonderfully thick brogue just seems to go well with melody, and it's a big reason why I once thought, circa 1993, Trashcan Sinatras were the best band in the world. Glasgow's The Twilight Sad, and specifically singer James Graham, rock a regional dialect that's to die for it. But above and beyond Graham's distinct voice, The Twilight Sad are just a really talented band. They're what can be described maybe as hard-pop with an ambient slant. The four guys have four-minute guitar anthems that are undeniably catchy and sing-a-long-able, but they also throw in strange stuff like theremins, thumb pianos, and saws to add a noisy and eccentric complexity to their verse-chorus-verse format. - Oh My Rockness

The Big Sleep

  • Finally, a new NYC band that isn't pretending to care what a young NYC band should supposedly sound like. These guys aren't retro (if anything, they are future-o), don't employ Wire-like guitars, and don't do the Hell yelp or Curtis croon. The Big Sleep are a trio that plays driving psych-rock that sounds similar to the forever-underrated Turing Machine, or Trans Am back when they were good. This band is extremely tight on the rhythms, creating walls of stunning guitar sound backed by precise percussion. Their songs definitely get a groove going, and you can almost hear each member's pure delight at how well they can rock it with each other. But their jams never cross that common threshold into ostentatious grandstanding. The Big Sleep know less is more, and 4-5 minutes is all they need to completely hook us and reel us right in. - Oh My Rockness

Other Passengers

  • Other Passengers are a new band that have been playing all over town and have gotten our favorite NYC blogs talking. Their music has been compared to Jesus and Mary Chain and Joy Division, but that's just because it's hip to give a shout-out to those two bands when any music is tabbed as "gloomy." It's true that Other Passengers have a darker sound than say, The Thermals, but since when does a bass line have to get you down? The band members are fans of Can, Sonic Youth and Pink Floyd, and these influences can certainly be heard in their hypnotic brand of post-punk psychedelia. Any fan of The Occasion and Inouk will probably also be into these guys. Other Passengers are a chaotic and complex band that you probably won't "get" the first time around. But then again, what worth getting has ever been gotten right away? - Oh My Rockness
