British Sea Power

  • England's (obviously) ever-ambitious British Sea Power create cinematic, psychedlic garage rock that would be a good soundtrack to the ballroom mask-party scene in Eyes Wide Shut. The core of the band's retro-meets-grandeur sound is their heavy guitars and attacking drum rolls, counterbalanced by warm keyboards and a smattering of electronica. These guys cull inspiration from their endless supply of unusual ideas of how music should sound. And it's easy to hear in the results of their creativity that they also have an endless love for bands like Joy Division, Wire, and Talking Heads. The bass player has been known to wear tree branches on his head and sometime the drummer beats his kit with a stuffed owl. Suffice it to say, British Sea Power are anything but generic. They're constantly concerned with the new instead of the borrowed. British Sea Power are a strangely wonderful band that does things their way. Oh, and they don't sound like Franz Ferdinand either. - Oh My Rockness

The Rosebuds

  • Indie rock trio the Rosebuds formed in May 2001, shortly after Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp met while in college in Wilmington, NC. They moved to Raleigh that fall and enlisted drummer Billy Alphin. After a split 7", nearby Merge Records discovered their demo in early 2003 and later released Make Out, their debut full-length, in October. Following that recording, Alphin left the group and was replaced by Jonathan Bass, who himself was replaced by Lee Waters for the recording of the band's second album, 2005's Birds Make Good Neighbors. By the release of their third album for Merge, 2007's Night of the Furies, the Rosebuds were down to the duo of Howard and Crisp. On the record they were joined by numerous friends, including Matt McCaughan on drums and the Shout Out Louds on backing vocals. - Kenyon Hopkin, All Music Guide

Jeffrey Lewis

  • Jeffrey Lewis was raised in New York City and is a maker of comic books, tragi-comic folk narratives, and lysergic garage rock. With brother Jack on bass and David Beauchamp on drums, the Jeffrey Lewis Band mixes 60s acoustic psychedelia like Pearls Before Swine with the experimental art-punk of the Fall and the urban lyricism of Lou Reed, sounding a bit like if Woody Guthrie fronted Sonic Youth. Live shows also incorporate "low budget videos", Jeff’s large illustrations displayed to accompany certain songs. In 2001 Jeffrey Lewis signed to Rough Trade Records and has since released four albums.
The Jeffrey Lewis Band has toured the US, UK and Europe, sharing bills with Devendra Banhart, Black Dice, Thurston Moore, the Fall, Beth Orton, Frank Black, the Fiery Furnaces, Daniel Johnston, Scout Niblett, the Mountain Goats, the Moldy Peaches, Cornershop, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, Wooden Wand, the Cribs, the Danielson Famile and others.
The album Jeffrey Lewis: 12 Crass Songs was released in the UK and Europe in October 2007 on Rough Trade, with US release slated for January 2008. The album is a collection of songs by the legendary anarchist punk band Crass, reworked by Jeffrey into glorious folk, rock, psychedelic, orchestral and electronica productions which dazzle the ear while losing none of the political power of the originals. For the recording of 12 Crass Songs Lewis was joined by Helen Schreiner on back up vocals.
12 Crass Songs follows in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed Jeffrey & Jack Lewis: City & Eastern Songs, which was produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Butthole Surfers, Low, Daniel Johnston, etc) and was selected as one of 2006's best albums in Time Out NY, the Boston Globe, CMJ Monthly and elsewhere. Jeffrey's most recent comic book series Fuff is currently up to issue six.
