Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks

  • The demise of Pavement was a bit of a nebulous thing - the band decided to go on hiatus in late 1999, but confirmation of a total breakup wasn't announced until November of 2000. In the intervening period, co-frontman Stephen Malkmus was busy putting together his solo project. Collaboration with Kim Gordon and Jim O'Rourke of Sonic Youth led to the development of new material, which Malkmus would record in Portland, OR, with help from drummer John Moen and bassist Joanna Bolme, who would come to be known as the Jicks. Malkmus intended to release his music himself, but when Matador got wind of it, they offered to put out the record, which it did in February of 2001...four months after Pavement's official breakup was revealed.
